Why am I doing This?

I love the internet. It's a great research tool, incredibly useful etc, addictive and until now, anonymous. I have never got to grips with social networking. I can't see the point, I've been trying twitter and facebook but all I seem to do is see snippets of conversations and photos of people I hardly know. I can't engage and I can't be bothered with it all. However I am at the beginning of my career in librarianship and I know this way lies the future so I am biting the bullet. I'm a bit scared of blogging (hence the name blographobic). It seems self indulgent and arrogant but I am also afraid I could get addicted. I am a library assistant in a sixth form college. We are just getting Moodle and I am hoping the library will be involved in this. I am very interested in the ways web 2 can be used, but I need to overcome my own misgivings. This is a first small step.

  1. Just want to say Well Done for giving it a go! I'm sure there'll be bits of social networking you'll love and I'm sure there are self-help groups for addiction out there, if it comes to "the worst"! :)

  2. I know how you feel...I'm finding blogging a bit of an uncomfortable process too, but it seems to be a necessary evil! I'm sure we'll get used to it. Good luck :)

  4. When I first started with Twitter and blogging I felt exactly the same, couldn't see the point, what a waste of time. Then it all sort of clicked into place and now I write blogs for work, create other web2.0 stuff and I'm loving it. Well done for taking up the challenge. I joined cpd23 because there are still things out there to learn. PS am addicted to Twitter!

  5. Hi I feel in a similar position, I am also a library assistant in a sixth form college and we will also be getting Moodle in September. I was always a bit afraid of Twitter and blogging, I thought who would be interested in what I have to say! (I have had a twitter acount for months now and I still haven't tweeted) But I am getting into it a bit more now, I have found them both very useful, they are great for keeping up to date with developments in the library world!Maybe I will even bite the bullet and actually tweet something soon...

  6. I can really relate to your stance on social networking and find it all a bit pointless myself sometimes. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery (so they say). So well done for giving it a go and can I say that I find your honesty very refreshing and you have made me feel like I'm not the only reluctant blogger. Maybe it get's easier the more you do?
